Answer masking can be used to screen (or mask) answers in a question using responses given to one or more previous questions. Masking helps to personalize a questionnaire to the respondent and improve data accuracy.
A questionnaire includes a multiple-response question,
Q1 "Which of these do you regularly eat?"
Carrots | ![]() |
Peas | ![]() |
Potatoes | ![]() |
Beans | ![]() |
Spinach | ![]() |
Q2 "Of the ones you regularly eat, which is your favorite?"
Carrots | ![]() |
Spinach | ![]() |
Both questions have the same list of choices available. The mask facility can be used to restrict the list of choices in Q2 to the answers given by the respondent at Q1 i.e. Carrots and Spinach ( the "favorite" that they choose has to be one of these two as they said they only ever eat Carrots and Spinach in Q1).
Our software allows masks to be applied to any single or multiple-response question.
